Northeast India can feel like a completely different trip every few hours.

You can start with a busy city, drive into misty mountains, stop at a monastery, eat smoked pork for lunch, and end the day somewhere that gets so quiet you can hear the river below your hotel.

If you’re visiting the Northeast for the first time, these 10 destinations are a good place to start.

1. Shillong, Meghalaya

Shillong is probably the easiest introduction to the Northeast.

The capital of Meghalaya has cafes, markets, waterfalls, viewpoints and enough hotels to make planning your first trip relatively easy. You can use Shillong as a base for exploring places such as Cherrapunji and Dawki.

Best for: first-time visitors, cafes, waterfalls, short trips.

Don’t miss: Umiam Lake, Laitlum Canyon and Elephant Falls.

2. Cherrapunji, Meghalaya

Cherrapunji, officially called Sohra, is where Meghalaya starts feeling wild.

The cliffs, waterfalls and dense greenery make the drive from Shillong worth it. Nohkalikai Falls is the big one, but there’s plenty to see around Sohra if you have a full day.

And if you enjoy walking, look into the living root bridges around the area.

A jeep safari through the grasslands gives you a completely different side of Assam.

Best for: wildlife, safaris and families.

Don’t miss: an early-morning safari.

4. Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

Tawang is the destination for a proper mountain road trip.

The journey takes you through high-altitude landscapes, winding roads and places such as Sela Pass before you reach Tawang. The enormous Tawang Monastery is one of the trip’s main stops.

The altitude also means you need to take the journey seriously. Give yourself time to adjust.

Best for: mountain trips, monasteries and road-trip lovers.

Gangtok is one of the easiest Northeast destinations for a first trip.

Dawki is close to the Bangladesh border, so it’s easy to combine with a Meghalaya road trip covering Shillong and Sohra.

Best for: boating, rivers and day trips.

Majuli gives you a completely different Assam experience.

The river island is known for its satras, traditional culture, villages and relaxed pace. Getting around by road and ferry is part of the experience.
