10 best Northeast India destinations for first-time travelers

Northeast India can feel like a completely different trip every few hours.

You can start with a busy city, drive into misty mountains, stop at a monastery, eat smoked pork for lunch, and end the day somewhere that gets so quiet you can hear the river below your hotel.

If you’re visiting the Northeast for the first time, these 10 destinations are a good place to start.

1. Shillong, Meghalaya

Shillong is probably the easiest introduction to the Northeast.

The capital of Meghalaya has cafes, markets, waterfalls, viewpoints and enough hotels to make planning your first trip relatively easy. You can use Shillong as a base for exploring places such as Cherrapunji and Dawki.

Best for: first-time visitors, cafes, waterfalls, short trips.

Don’t miss: Umiam Lake, Laitlum Canyon and Elephant Falls.

2. Cherrapunji, Meghalaya

Cherrapunji, officially called Sohra, is where Meghalaya starts feeling wild.

The cliffs, waterfalls and dense greenery make the drive from Shillong worth it. Nohkalikai Falls is the big one, but there’s plenty to see around Sohra if you have a full day.

And if you enjoy walking, look into the living root bridges around the area.

Best for: waterfalls, nature, road trips and photography.

3. Kaziranga National Park, Assam

Kaziranga is one of the places I’d put high on a first Northeast itinerary.

The park is famous for its greater one-horned rhinoceros, but you can also spot elephants, wild water buffalo, deer and plenty of bird species.

A jeep safari through the grasslands gives you a completely different side of Assam.

Best for: wildlife, safaris and families.

Don’t miss: an early-morning safari.

4. Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

Tawang is the destination for a proper mountain road trip.

The journey takes you through high-altitude landscapes, winding roads and places such as Sela Pass before you reach Tawang. The enormous Tawang Monastery is one of the trip’s main stops.

The altitude also means you need to take the journey seriously. Give yourself time to adjust.

Best for: mountain trips, monasteries and road-trip lovers.

Don’t miss: Tawang Monastery, Sela Pass and Bum La Pass if access is available.

5. Gangtok, Sikkim

Gangtok is one of the easiest Northeast destinations for a first trip.

The city sits on a mountain ridge with views across the surrounding hills, and MG Marg is a great place to spend an evening after a day of sightseeing.

You can also use Gangtok as a base for trips toward Tsomgo Lake, Nathula and other parts of Sikkim.

Best for: couples, families, first-time mountain travelers.

6. Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh

Ziro feels slower.

Rice fields stretch between green hills, small villages sit quietly in the valley, and the Apatani culture gives the area a character you won’t find in a typical hill station.

It’s a good choice if you want a few days away from crowded tourist areas.

Best for: slow travel, villages, culture and nature.

Don’t miss: Hapoli, nearby Apatani villages and the valley’s rice fields.

7. Dawki, Meghalaya

You’ve probably seen photographs of Dawki’s unbelievably clear water.

The Umngot River is the star here. On a good day, boats appear to float above the riverbed.

Dawki is close to the Bangladesh border, so it’s easy to combine with a Meghalaya road trip covering Shillong and Sohra.

Best for: boating, rivers and day trips.

Don’t miss: an Umngot River boat ride.

8. Majuli, Assam

Majuli gives you a completely different Assam experience.

The river island is known for its satras, traditional culture, villages and relaxed pace. Getting around by road and ferry is part of the experience.

Spend at least 2 days here if your schedule allows.

Best for: culture, village life, photography and slow travel.

Don’t miss: the satras and a sunset by the Brahmaputra.

9. Kohima, Nagaland

Kohima is a great starting point for discovering Nagaland.

The city sits among forested hills and has a strong local food and cultural scene. If you’re visiting during the Hornbill Festival, Kisama Heritage Village becomes one of the main places to visit.

Nagaland is especially rewarding if you’re interested in local communities and food.

Best for: culture, food, festivals and mountain views.

10. Aizawl, Mizoram

Aizawl is built across steep hills, so even ordinary drives through the city come with mountain views.

Mizoram has a distinct culture, food and architecture, and Aizawl gives you a good base for experiencing it without immediately heading into remote areas.

Which Northeast destination should you pick?

If this is your first trip to Northeast India, I’d narrow it down like this:

For a first trip, Shillong + Cherrapunji + Dawki is probably the easiest combination. You can cover the 3 without turning the holiday into a week-long exercise in sitting inside a car.

If you have 10-14 days, I’d look at adding Kaziranga and either Tawang or Ziro depending on whether you want wildlife or a slower mountain trip.
