Best places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh is the kind of place where the road can be half the trip.

You leave Assam, climb into the hills, watch the scenery change every hour, and suddenly you’re looking at snow-covered mountains. Then you turn a corner and there’s a monastery, a forest, a river, or a tiny village you hadn’t planned for.

The state has several very different travel circuits, from the classic Tezpur-Bhalukpong-Bomdila-Tawang route to Ziro, Mechuka, Pasighat and the remote valleys of eastern Arunachal. (Arunachal Tourism)

Here are the places I’d put highest on your list.

1. Tawang

If you’re visiting Arunachal for the first time, Tawang is the obvious starting point.

The Tawang Monastery sits at around 10,000 feet, surrounded by huge mountain slopes and deep valleys. Around town, you’ve got Sela Pass, Sela Lake, P.T. Tso, Sangetsar Lake and several other high-altitude lakes. (Arunachal Tourism)

The journey from Assam is part of the fun. The usual route runs through Bhalukpong, Bomdila and Dirang before climbing towards Tawang.

And if conditions allow, you can continue towards Bum La near the India-China border. Carry warm clothes even when the weather in Assam feels completely harmless.

Best for: mountains, snow, monasteries, road trips and first-time visitors.

2. Dirang

Image

Dirang is where I’d slow the trip down.

The valley sits between Bomdila and Tawang and has apple and kiwi orchards, hot springs, monasteries and the beautiful Sangti Valley. The National Research Centre on Yak is also nearby. (Arunachal Tourism)

Sangti is especially nice if you want a quieter couple of days. During winter, black-necked cranes visit the valley.

And after a long mountain drive, sitting near a hot spring sounds pretty good.

Best for: relaxed mountain stays, families, couples, photography and a slower Arunachal trip.

3. Ziro Valley

Ziro feels completely different from Tawang.

The landscape is gentler, with wide green valleys, rice fields and pine-covered hills. The Apatani cultural landscape around Ziro is a big part of the experience.

You can also explore Talley Valley, which lies about 32 km from Ziro and is known for its forests and biodiversity. (Arunachal Tourism)

Give Ziro at least 2 nights. Rushing through it on the way somewhere else misses the point.

Best for: villages, culture, photography, slow travel and nature.

4. Mechuka

Mechuka is for people who don’t mind spending extra hours on the road.

The valley sits in Shi-Yomi district near the international border, surrounded by enormous mountains and scattered villages. The drive itself becomes part of the experience.

You’ll see wooden homes, grazing land, mountain streams and wide open valleys that feel a long way from the usual tourist routes.

The road can take time. That’s exactly why Mechuka feels special.

Best for: remote travel, photography, mountain villages and travellers who like getting away from busy tourist circuits.

5. Bomdila

Image

Bomdila is one of the classic stops on the Tawang road.

At around 2,217 metres, the town has monasteries, craft centres, apple orchards and mountain viewpoints. On clear days, you can see Himalayan peaks from around town. (Arunachal Tourism)

The town also gives you a good introduction to the culture of the region before you head higher towards Dirang and Tawang.

Best for: monasteries, mountain views, local culture and breaking the Tawang journey.

6. Pasighat

Image

Pasighat sits beside the mighty Siang River and feels very different from western Arunachal.

You can visit Daying Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary, Sirki Waterfall, Raneghat and several places around the Siang. The sanctuary is also home to species including hoolock gibbons, takins, red pandas and many resident and migratory birds. (Arunachal Tourism)

It’s also a useful base if you’re planning to travel deeper into the Siang region.

Best for: rivers, wildlife, birding and eastern Arunachal.

7. Itanagar

Itanagar is the practical entry point for many trips through central Arunachal.

The city has Ita Fort, the Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum and Ganga Lake, locally known as Geker Sinying. (Arunachal Tourism)

I wouldn’t spend a huge part of an Arunachal trip here, but 1 day works well if you’re passing through.

Best for: history, local culture and starting a Ziro-side road trip.

8. Namdapha National Park

If mountains aren’t your only reason for coming to Arunachal, put Namdapha on the list.

Located around Miao in Changlang district, Namdapha takes you into one of the state’s great forest regions. The trip feels much more like a wildlife expedition than a conventional hill-station holiday.

You’ll need more planning here, especially for transport and permits.

Best for: wildlife, forests, birding and adventure.

9. Roing and Mayudia

Image

Roing is the gateway to the Dibang Valley, and the scenery gets increasingly wild as you head towards Mayudia.

Mayudia Pass is particularly popular during the colder months when snow can cover the higher stretches of the road.

The official Arunachal tourism circuits specifically include the Roing-Mayudia-Anini route, so you can continue deeper into Dibang Valley if you have the time. (Arunachal Tourism)

Best for: snow, mountain drives and exploring eastern Arunachal.

10. Anini

Image

Anini is one for the adventurous traveller.

It’s deep inside Dibang Valley, surrounded by huge mountains and sparsely populated landscapes. Getting there takes considerably more effort than visiting Tawang or Ziro.

That’s part of the appeal.

If you’ve already done the popular Arunachal routes and want something quieter, Anini deserves serious consideration.

Best for: remote valleys, long road trips, photography and solitude.

11. Thembang

Image

Thembang is a small Monpa village near Bomdila, and it’s a great place to see traditional mountain life.

The village has old stone fortifications, traditional homes and a monastery. The surrounding landscape reaches from forested slopes to high alpine areas, with views towards the mountains. (Arunachal Tourism)

It’s the kind of place where I’d rather spend a night than tick off in 30 minutes.

Best for: village stays, Monpa culture, architecture and quiet mountain scenery.

12. Bhalukpong

Image

Image

Bhalukpong is usually where the plains give way to the mountains on the Tawang route.

The Kameng River runs through the area, and the town works well as your first Arunachal stop after entering from Assam. The official tourism circuit places Bhalukpong directly on the Tezpur-Bhalukpong-Bomdila-Tawang route. (Arunachal Tourism)

You can also look at nearby Tipi and the orchid areas around Sessa.

Best for: the start of a Tawang road trip, rivers and short stops.

So, where should you actually go?

If you’ve got 5-6 days, I’d pick:

Guwahati → Bhalukpong → Bomdila → Dirang → Tawang → Guwahati

This is the classic Arunachal trip. You’ll get mountains, monasteries, high passes, lakes and plenty of road-trip scenery.

For 7-9 days, add more time around Tawang or make a Ziro trip instead.

For 10-14 days, I’d seriously consider going beyond the standard Tawang circuit. Ziro, Mechuka, Pasighat, Roing or Namdapha can give you a very different Arunachal experience.

And don’t forget the permit. Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit to enter Arunachal Pradesh. The official tourist eILP currently lists a fee of ₹300 for stays up to 3 days and ₹500 for stays beyond 3 days up to 14 days. (ILP Arunachal Pradesh)

If you’re coming from Guwahati, Tawang, Dirang and Ziro are the easiest places to build a first Arunachal trip around. For a second trip, I’d pick Mechuka or the Dibang Valley.
