Sikkim trip cost: complete budget guide for 2026

A Sikkim trip can cost around ₹12,000 to ₹20,000 per person for 5 days if you travel on a sensible budget and share transport.

Go for better hotels, private taxis, and more sightseeing, and the same trip can easily reach ₹25,000 to ₹40,000 per person.

Your biggest expenses are accommodation and taxis. Food is usually the easy part.

How much does a Sikkim trip cost?

For a 5-day trip, keep these numbers in mind:

These figures assume you’re starting from Siliguri/NJP/Bagdogra and sharing rooms and taxis with other travellers. Your flight or train fare to reach Siliguri is extra.

Sikkim hotel cost

Gangtok has plenty of budget rooms. Current listings show budget hotels starting at around ₹700, although actual prices depend heavily on dates, location and demand.

For trip planning, I’d use these working numbers:

• Budget hotel: ₹800–₹1,500 per room
• Comfortable hotel: ₹2,000–₹4,000 per room
• Better hotel: ₹4,000–₹7,000+ per room

If 2 people share a ₹2,500 room, your accommodation cost is only ₹1,250 each per night.

That’s why travelling as a pair can make a big difference.

Homestays in places such as Lachung and Zuluk can also include meals in the room price. Current 2026 travel estimates put Lachung homestays around ₹1,500–₹2,500 per night and Zuluk around ₹1,200–₹2,000.

Food cost in Sikkim

You can eat reasonably well without spending much.

For a budget trip, keep around ₹400–₹700 per person per day for food.

A basic meal at a local restaurant might cost ₹100–₹200. Add tea, snacks and a better dinner, and ₹500 a day is a comfortable planning figure.

For 5 days:

Budget food: ₹2,000–₹3,500 per person.

If you eat at cafés around MG Marg in Gangtok or choose more expensive restaurants regularly, keep ₹800–₹1,200 per day instead.

Sikkim taxi cost

This is where your budget can move quickly.

Public transport exists, but taxis are the main way tourists get around Sikkim. Shared taxis are much cheaper when you can find seats.

Current 2026 estimates put a Gangtok local sightseeing trip at roughly ₹2,500–₹3,500 for a small vehicle, with larger vehicles costing more.

The official Sikkim Tourism taxi fare chart also lists specific tourist routes. For example, Gangtok to Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and Kupup is listed at ₹4,200 per vehicle, while the same circuit including Nathula is ₹4,800.

So if you’re travelling with 4 people, that ₹4,800 Nathula circuit works out to roughly ₹1,200 each, before any additional applicable charges.

That’s the trick with Sikkim.

Share the taxi and your per-person cost drops sharply.

Gangtok sightseeing cost

For a typical Gangtok sightseeing day, budget around ₹600–₹1,000 per person if you’re sharing a car.

A private small car may cost roughly ₹2,500–₹3,500 for the day, while larger SUVs can cost considerably more.

Nathula Pass requires a special permit and availability can be restricted.

If you get 4 people together, a ₹4,800 vehicle works out to about ₹1,200 each.

Don’t build your entire itinerary around Nathula until you’ve confirmed that your permit and route are available.

North Sikkim trip cost

North Sikkim needs a bigger budget because the journey involves longer road travel, accommodation and permits.

For Gangtok to Lachung/Yumthang, current 2026 package quotes start around ₹11,000 for a 1-night/2-day SUV package. A 2-night/3-day North Sikkim package is around ₹16,000 onwards in current market listings.

The official Sikkim Tourism fare chart lists Gangtok to Yumthang at ₹8,400 per vehicle including a night halt, and the combined Lachung, Yumthang, Lachen and Gurudongmar circuit at ₹16,000 including 2 nights. Government taxes and applicable additional charges can be added.

For a North Sikkim trip, I’d keep ₹5,000–₹8,000 per person aside if you’re sharing the vehicle.

Sikkim trip cost from NJP or Bagdogra

Most travellers enter Sikkim through NJP Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport.

Current 2026 taxi estimates put NJP/Bagdogra to Gangtok at roughly ₹3,500–₹4,500 for a sedan, with SUVs costing more.

If 4 people share a ₹4,000 taxi:

₹4,000 ÷ 4 = ₹1,000 per person

The return journey adds another ₹1,000 per person when shared.

So keep roughly ₹2,000–₹2,500 per person for the round-trip transfer between the Siliguri area and Gangtok when travelling in a shared car.

Shared taxis can bring this down further.

For a couple travelling from NJP or Bagdogra, a sensible 5-day budget is around:

The biggest saving comes from sharing the same taxi and hotel room.

A couple travelling during peak holiday dates can spend considerably more.

Sikkim trip cost for a family

For a family of 4, the maths changes again.

A private taxi becomes much more reasonable because you’re dividing the vehicle cost between 4 people.

For 5 days, I’d keep around ₹50,000–₹70,000 for 4 people, excluding the cost of reaching NJP or Bagdogra.

With better hotels, private SUVs and North Sikkim, ₹80,000–₹1 lakh+ is easy to reach.

How to save money on a Sikkim trip

Travel with 3–4 people.

Taxi fares are generally quoted per vehicle, so filling the seats can make a huge difference.

Stay slightly away from the busiest parts of Gangtok if you’re chasing lower room prices.

Eat at local restaurants instead of making every meal a café stop.

Book North Sikkim transport after comparing what the package includes. A cheap-looking quote can change once vehicle charges, permits, meals or night halts are added.

Travel during the shoulder or lean season when road and weather conditions allow it. Sikkim’s transport department notes that lean-season taxi fares can be 20% lower than notified fares.

How much cash should you carry?

For a 5-day Sikkim trip, I’d carry around ₹3,000–₹5,000 in cash per person even if you’ve got UPI.

Gangtok is well connected for digital payments, but you’re travelling into mountain areas where network coverage and payment availability can change.

Small shops, roadside stops and remote homestays are where cash still comes in handy.

When is Sikkim cheapest?

Hotel and taxi prices tend to rise during busy holiday periods.

For a cheaper trip, look at dates outside major school holidays and long weekends.

April to June is popular, while October to December also attracts plenty of visitors. Monsoon months can be cheaper, but road conditions can make remote areas harder to reach.

And Sikkim is a mountain state. Give yourself some flexibility when planning long road journeys.

If you’re planning your first Sikkim trip and want one number to work with, I’d start with ₹18,000 per person for 5 days, excluding your journey to NJP or Bagdogra.

That gives you enough room for a decent hotel, local food, shared taxis and the main Gangtok attractions.

For a 7-day trip with North Sikkim, I’d keep ₹25,000–₹35,000 per person as a practical starting budget.

Then add your flight or train fare.

That’s a much safer way to plan Sikkim than booking a cheap package and discovering halfway through the trip that every mountain road needs another taxi.
