7-Day Sikkim itinerary for first-time travelers

Sikkim is compact on the map, but the roads have their own opinions.

For a first trip, 7 days is enough to see Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake, North Sikkim, and Pelling without turning the whole holiday into a race against Google Maps.

Here’s the route I’d pick.

Day 1: Arrive in Gangtok

Most travelers enter Sikkim through Siliguri, New Jalpaiguri (NJP), or Bagdogra.

From Bagdogra or NJP, expect roughly 4–5 hours to Gangtok, depending on traffic and road conditions. Keep the first day easy. Check into your hotel, eat something warm, and walk around MG Marg in the evening.

If you reach early, you can visit Rumtek Monastery before heading into Gangtok.

Otherwise, save your energy. The mountain roads have already done enough for one day.

Stay: Gangtok

Day 2: Gangtok sightseeing

Start with Tashi View Point, then work your way through Gangtok’s main sights.

A good day looks like:

  • Tashi View Point
  • Ganesh Tok
  • Hanuman Tok
  • Enchey Monastery
  • Namgyal Institute of Tibetology
  • Do Drul Chorten
  • MG Marg

You don’t need to spend hours at every stop. Give yourself time to sit down somewhere, drink tea, and actually look at the mountains.

Stay: Gangtok

Day 3: Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass

Leave Gangtok early for Tsomgo Lake.

The lake sits at around 12,300 feet, and the landscape changes quickly as you climb. Snow is possible in winter and early spring, while summer brings a very different look.

If permits and road conditions allow, continue to Nathula Pass, followed by Baba Mandir.

Nathula is close to the India-China border, so permits are required and access can change with weather or local restrictions. Your driver or tour operator will usually handle the permit process.

Head back to Gangtok by evening.

Stay: Gangtok

Day 4: Gangtok to Lachung

This is your long road day.

Leave early for Lachung, a mountain village in North Sikkim. The drive can take most of the day, with waterfalls, river valleys and steep mountain roads along the way.

You might stop at places such as Seven Sisters Waterfall and Singhik View Point, depending on your route and road conditions.

By the time you reach Lachung, you’ll probably want dinner and bed.

Stay: Lachung

Day 5: Yumthang Valley and Zero Point

Get up early.

The main reason you’re in Lachung is Yumthang Valley, often called the Valley of Flowers. Continue farther toward Zero Point if the route is open and your permits allow it.

Yumthang changes dramatically through the year. Spring brings flowers, while winter can cover the higher areas in snow.

Zero Point is colder, higher and much more exposed. Take layers, gloves and proper shoes.

Return to Lachung, then continue toward Gangtok if your itinerary and road conditions allow. Some operators instead keep the night in North Sikkim, so confirm the exact plan before booking.

Stay: Gangtok or North Sikkim, depending on your transport package

Day 6: Gangtok to Pelling

Now head west.

The journey to Pelling takes several hours, but the scenery makes the drive worthwhile. Pelling is quieter than Gangtok and gives you a completely different side of Sikkim.

After checking in, visit:

  • Pemayangtse Monastery
  • Rabdentse Ruins
  • Skywalk and Chenrezig statue

If the weather cooperates, you’ll also get a great view of Kanchenjunga.

Stay: Pelling

Day 7: Pelling to Siliguri or NJP

Wake up early and check the mountain view before leaving.

Then drive back toward Siliguri or NJP for your train or onward journey.

If your flight leaves from Bagdogra, leave plenty of buffer time. Mountain traffic doesn’t care about your boarding time.

Your 7-day route at a glance

Day Route Main experiences Night
1 Bagdogra/NJP → Gangtok MG Marg, local walk Gangtok
2 Gangtok Monasteries, viewpoints, city Gangtok
3 Gangtok → Tsomgo → Nathula High-altitude lakes, border area Gangtok
4 Gangtok → Lachung North Sikkim drive Lachung
5 Lachung → Yumthang → Zero Point Valley, snow, mountain scenery Gangtok/North Sikkim
6 Gangtok → Pelling Monastery, ruins, Kanchenjunga Pelling
7 Pelling → NJP/Bagdogra Return journey —

A few things I’d plan before booking

Permits: Nathula and parts of North Sikkim require permits. Rules and access can change, especially during bad weather.

Roads: Don’t pack the itinerary too tightly. A landslide, snowfall or traffic jam can turn a 4-hour drive into a much longer one.

Altitude: Tsomgo, Nathula, Yumthang and Zero Point are much higher than Gangtok. Take it easy when you arrive at altitude.

Best time: March to May is good for flowers and pleasant weather. October to December is better for clear mountain views. Winter brings snow but also more weather-related road uncertainty.

Transport: For a first Sikkim trip, I’d use a local cab or established tour operator for the North Sikkim section. Those permits and road logistics are easier when someone local is handling them.

And if you can stretch the trip to 8 or 9 days, I’d do it. One extra night gives you breathing room, especially around North Sikkim.
