Loktak Lake travel guide

Loktak Lake is the place to go when you want to see a very different side of Manipur.

The lake sits about 48 km from Imphal, in Bishnupur district. Its most famous feature is the floating vegetation islands called phumdis, where people have traditionally lived, fished, and moved around by boat. (Manipur Tourism)

And then there’s Keibul Lamjao National Park, the floating national park on the lake and the last natural home of the endangered Sangai, Manipur’s brow-antlered deer. (Manipur Tourism)

Why Loktak Lake is worth visiting

The first thing you’ll notice is the sheer scale of the water.

From Sendra, you can look across the lake and see boats moving between patches of floating greenery. Some of those patches are phumdis, thick floating masses of vegetation that have shaped life around Loktak for generations. (Manipur Tourism)

The view changes completely depending on the weather. Early morning can be misty and quiet. By afternoon, the hills and floating islands stand out sharply against the blue water.

If you like photography, give yourself time here. Don’t rush through it in 30 minutes.

Things to do at Loktak Lake

1. See the lake from Sendra

Sendra is one of the easiest places to get a broad view of Loktak Lake.

The tourist area sits above the lake and gives you a bird’s-eye view of the floating islands and surrounding hills. There’s also a tourist home and cafeteria. (Manipur Tourism)

Go earlier in the day if you want softer light and fewer people.

2. Take a boat ride

A boat ride changes the experience.

From the water, the lake feels much larger than it does from Sendra. You’ll see fishing activity, narrow waterways and phumdis from much closer.

Boating and water sports are organised around the Takmu Water Sports Complex, where activities have included local boat races, water skiing, motorboating and windsurfing. (Manipur Tourism)

Ask locally about current boat availability and prices before getting in. These can change.

3. Visit Keibul Lamjao National Park

This is the part I’d prioritise if you’re making the trip to Loktak.

Keibul Lamjao National Park covers floating phumdis on the southern part of the lake. It’s famous for the Sangai, the brow-antlered deer found only in Manipur. (Manipur Tourism)

The park also has otters, hog deer and many water birds. Migratory birds are particularly associated with the area from November to March. (Manipur Tourism)

Bring binoculars if wildlife is your thing. Spotting a Sangai isn’t guaranteed, so give yourself enough time.

4. Explore Moirang

Moirang is close to Loktak Lake and makes sense as part of the same day trip.

The town has deep connections with Manipur’s history and the Indian freedom movement. The Indian National Army flag was unfurled here on April 14, 1944, and the INA Museum preserves photographs, letters and other material from that period. (Manipur Tourism)

Moirang also has an important connection with Meitei culture and the annual Lai Haraoba tradition. (Manipur Tourism)

5. Stop at Red Hill

If you’re driving from Imphal, Red Hill (Maibam Lokpaching) can be added to the route.

It’s associated with the fighting between British and Japanese forces during World War II. The India Peace Memorial is located here. (Manipur Tourism)

It adds a historical layer to what could otherwise be just a scenic lake trip.

Best time to visit Loktak Lake

I’d pick October to April for a comfortable sightseeing trip.

For birdwatching, November to March is especially interesting because migratory birds can be seen around Keibul Lamjao and the lake. (Manipur Tourism)

The lake looks different in every season, though. If your main goal is photography, weather and light matter more than chasing one perfect month.

How to reach Loktak Lake

The usual base is Imphal.

Loktak Lake is roughly 48 km from Imphal, and the journey can be done by private car, taxi or an organised local tour. (Manipur Tourism)

If you’re flying in, Imphal Airport is about 8 km from central Imphal. There is currently no direct train to Imphal, so rail travellers need to continue from a nearby railhead such as Dimapur or Guwahati. (Manipur Tourism)

A private car is probably the easiest option if you want to combine Sendra, Moirang, Red Hill and Keibul Lamjao in one day.

How much time do you need?

1 day is enough for the main Loktak circuit.

A practical route from Imphal could look like this:

• Morning: Leave Imphal
• Morning: Red Hill
• Late morning: Moirang and INA Museum
• Afternoon: Sendra viewpoint and Loktak Lake
• Afternoon: Boat ride, if available
• Late afternoon: Keibul Lamjao National Park
• Evening: Return to Imphal

If you want slower mornings, photography or more time around the lake, stay overnight near Loktak instead.

Loktak Lake travel tips

Carry water and some food with you. Manipur Tourism specifically advises travellers to carry food and water because facilities can become limited outside the main city. (Manipur Tourism)

Wear shoes you can comfortably walk in. A hat, sunscreen and a light jacket are useful too, depending on the season.

And don’t plan to drive unfamiliar rural roads late at night. Manipur Tourism advises against driving on highways and rural roads after sundown. (Manipur Tourism)

Where to stay

Imphal is the easiest base if you want more hotel and restaurant choices.

Staying closer to Sendra/Loktak makes more sense if you want an early start, a quieter evening, or more time around the lake.

I’d choose Imphal for a short Manipur trip and spend 1 full day on the Loktak circuit.

A simple Loktak Lake budget

Your biggest costs will usually be transport and accommodation.

For a day trip from Imphal, budget roughly:

Is Loktak Lake worth visiting?

Yes.

If you’re already travelling through Manipur, I’d put Loktak Lake near the top of the list. The combination of open water, floating phumdis, fishing communities, Sendra’s viewpoint and Keibul Lamjao gives you something you won’t get from a standard hill-station itinerary.

And if you can spare the time, slow down for a while.

Sit near the water. Watch the boats move through the phumdis. Let the lake do the work.
