7-day Northeast India itinerary for first-time visitors

By Suman

Northeast India is a big place. Trying to cover all 8 states in 7 days would leave you spending half the trip inside a car.

For a first trip, pick one compact route and give yourself enough time to actually enjoy it. This itinerary focuses on Assam and Meghalaya, with Guwahati as the starting point.

The 7-day route

Guwahati → Shillong → Cherrapunji → Mawlynnong → Guwahati → Kaziranga

You’ll get hill towns, waterfalls, caves, forests, local food and a proper wildlife day without turning the trip into a road-trip endurance test.

Day 1: Guwahati to Shillong

Start early from Guwahati and drive toward Shillong. The journey takes roughly 3 hours, depending on traffic and stops.

Once you’re in Shillong, keep the first day easy.

Visit Umiam Lake on the way, then check into your hotel and spend the evening around Police Bazaar. If you still have energy, walk around Ward’s Lake or visit Shillong Peak for the views.

Stay: Shillong

Don’t pack the day too tightly. Shillong traffic can eat into your sightseeing time.

Day 2: Explore Shillong

Give Shillong a full day.

Start with Laitlum Canyon, then visit Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak. Spend the evening around Police Bazaar, where you’ll find plenty of cafés, restaurants and local shops.

If you’re into music, Shillong is especially fun in the evening. The city has a serious live-music culture.

Stay: Shillong

Day 3: Shillong to Cherrapunji

Leave Shillong after breakfast and drive toward Cherrapunji, also called Sohra.

The route itself is part of the fun. Stop at viewpoints along the way, then visit Nohkalikai Falls and explore Mawsmai Cave if conditions allow.

During the monsoon, the waterfalls can be spectacular. Roads and walking trails can also get wet and slippery, so keep some flexibility in your schedule.

Stay: Cherrapunji/Sohra

Day 4: Cherrapunji and the living root bridges

This is your walking day.

Head toward the Nongriat living root bridge if you’re comfortable with a long trek and plenty of stairs. The route is physically demanding, so start early and carry water.

If that trek sounds too much, choose easier viewpoints and waterfalls around Sohra instead. You don’t get bonus points for arriving at your hotel completely destroyed.

Stay: Cherrapunji/Sohra

Day 5: Cherrapunji to Mawlynnong, then Guwahati

Drive toward Mawlynnong, known for its village setting and surrounding greenery.

You can also visit nearby Dawki and the Umngot River if road and weather conditions work in your favor. The India-Bangladesh border is close by, so carry identification and follow local instructions around restricted areas.

Later, drive back toward Guwahati.

It’s a long day, so leave early.

Stay: Guwahati

Day 6: Guwahati to Kaziranga

Head toward Kaziranga National Park in the morning.

Check into your accommodation and keep the afternoon relaxed. Depending on the season and safari timings, you may be able to take an afternoon safari.

Kaziranga is famous for the one-horned rhinoceros, but you can also spot elephants, deer, wild water buffalo and plenty of birdlife.

Stay: Kaziranga

Day 7: Kaziranga safari and return to Guwahati

Wake up early for a morning safari.

Early hours are usually a good time for wildlife viewing, and you’ll avoid wasting your final day sleeping until noon. After breakfast, start your drive back to Guwahati.

If your flight leaves late, you can squeeze in a few hours in Guwahati before heading to the airport.

Where should you stay?

For a first trip, keep accommodation simple and central.

Shillong: Stay around Police Bazaar, Laitumkhrah or nearby areas.

Cherrapunji: Stay around Sohra if waterfalls and nature are your priority.

Kaziranga: Pick a property near the park’s safari zone you’re using. This cuts down early-morning driving.

How much does 7 days cost?

For 1 person, a rough budget could look like this:

Expense Budget range
Accommodation ₹1,500–₹3,500/night
Food ₹500–₹1,000/day
Shared/local transport ₹3,000–₹6,000
Private cab ₹12,000–₹20,000+
Activities & entry fees ₹2,000–₹5,000
Approx. total ₹18,000–₹45,000+

Prices vary heavily with hotel choice, season and whether you’re travelling alone or splitting a cab.

For 2–4 people, a private vehicle becomes much easier to justify because you can split the cost.

Best time for this itinerary

October to April is the easiest period for a first visit if you want comfortable road travel and outdoor sightseeing.

Meghalaya’s monsoon, usually around June to September, is a completely different experience. Waterfalls can be huge, forests turn intensely green and the weather can be dramatic.

But heavy rain can also affect roads and trekking conditions. Check local conditions before heading out.

What to pack

Keep your luggage practical.

  • Light jacket or fleece
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Rain jacket
  • Small backpack
  • Power bank
  • Basic medicines
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Government ID
  • Quick-dry clothes
  • Cash for smaller towns and roadside stops

And bring shoes you can get dirty. You’re going to Meghalaya.

A better way to plan your first Northeast trip

Seven days is enough to get a taste of Northeast India, but you’ll enjoy it more if you resist the temptation to add another state every time you open Google Maps.

This route gives you Shillong, Sohra, Mawlynnong, Guwahati and Kaziranga without forcing you through huge daily drives.

If you’ve got 10–14 days, then I’d start adding Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim or Nagaland as separate routes rather than squeezing them into the same week.
