Best places to visit near Guwahati

Guwahati works well as a base for short trips. Give yourself 1 to 3 days and you can reach temples, forests, rivers, villages, and a few genuinely beautiful corners of Assam.

Here are the places I’d put highest on the list.

1. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

Distance from Guwahati: Around 50 km
Best for: Rhino sightings and a quick wildlife trip

Pobitora is probably the easiest wildlife escape from Guwahati.

The sanctuary is famous for its one-horned rhinoceroses, and because it’s relatively small, a safari doesn’t eat up your entire day. You can leave Guwahati early, do a safari, eat lunch, and be back in the city by evening.

If you’ve got only 1 free day, I’d pick Pobitora over a longer trip to Kaziranga.

2. Chandubi Lake

Distance from Guwahati: Around 65 km
Best for: A quiet day beside the lake

Chandubi Lake sits at the foot of the Garo Hills and feels a world away from Guwahati.

You can take a boat, walk around the lake, eat local food, or simply sit there and do very little. Honestly, that last option is probably the best one.

Go during the cooler months when the weather is pleasant.

3. Hajo

Distance from Guwahati: Around 30 km
Best for: Temples, history, and a half-day trip

Hajo is an easy trip from Guwahati and one of the more interesting places to visit if you want some culture along with your sightseeing.

The Hayagriva Madhava Temple is the main attraction. Hajo is also associated with the Muslim pilgrimage site Powa Mecca, which makes the town especially interesting from a religious and historical point of view.

You can comfortably combine Hajo with Sualkuchi on the same day.

4. Sualkuchi

Image

Distance from Guwahati: Around 35 km
Best for: Assamese silk and traditional weaving

Sualkuchi is where you go when you want to see Assam’s silk tradition up close.

Walk into a weaving household or workshop and you’ll see how silk fabric is made on traditional looms. The town is particularly known for Muga, Eri, and Pat silk.

And yes, you’ll probably end up buying something.

5. Deepor Beel

Distance from central Guwahati: Around 15 km
Best for: Birdwatching and sunsets

Deepor Beel is one of the easiest places to escape the traffic without actually leaving Guwahati very far.

It’s a large freshwater wetland and an important habitat for birds. Early morning is best if you’re interested in birdwatching.

For everyone else, go around sunset. Take your time.

6. Umananda Island

Distance from Guwahati: Within the city
Best for: A short river trip

Umananda is a small island in the Brahmaputra with the Umananda Temple sitting on it.

You can take a ferry from Guwahati and reach the island fairly quickly. The boat ride is part of the fun, especially when the Brahmaputra is calm.

It’s an easy addition to a Guwahati sightseeing day.

7. Madan Kamdev

Distance from Guwahati: Around 40 km
Best for: Ancient temple ruins and archaeology

Madan Kamdev is a small archaeological site surrounded by greenery.

The scattered stone ruins and carvings are believed to date to around the 9th and 10th centuries. The site doesn’t take an entire day, which makes it a good stop if you’re building a road trip around the area.

Pair it with Hajo or another nearby stop.

8. Amrengkona

Distance from Guwahati: Roughly 90 km
Best for: Rural Assam and quieter landscapes

Amrengkona is worth considering if you prefer places where the main attraction is simply the surroundings.

You’ll find green hills, village roads, ponds, and a slower pace than Guwahati. It’s better suited to a relaxed road trip than a checklist-style sightseeing day.

9. Manas National Park

Image

Distance from Guwahati: Around 140 km
Best for: Wildlife and a 2-day trip

Manas takes more planning than Pobitora, but it’s a much bigger trip.

The park sits close to the Bhutan border, with forests, grasslands and the Himalayan foothills creating a very different setting from the wetlands around Guwahati.

If you’re staying overnight, give yourself at least 2 days.

10. Nameri National Park

Image

Distance from Guwahati: Around 220 km
Best for: Forests, rivers, and adventure

Nameri is farther away, so I’d treat it as a proper weekend trip.

The Jia Bhoroli River runs through the area, and rafting and river activities are among the reasons people visit. The forest itself is another big draw.

If you like nature more than monuments, Nameri deserves a spot on your Assam itinerary.

11. Orang National Park

Image

Image

Image

Image

Distance from Guwahati: Around 140 km
Best for: Wildlife without going all the way to Kaziranga

Orang is another option for a wildlife-focused road trip from Guwahati.

It’s smaller than Kaziranga but has rhinos, elephants, deer, wild buffalo and plenty of birdlife. The Brahmaputra floodplain gives the park its open grassland character.

It’s a good choice if you’ve already done Pobitora and want another safari experience.

12. Meghalaya

Distance from Guwahati to Shillong: Around 100 km
Best for: Hills, waterfalls, and a proper weekend

And then there’s Meghalaya.

Shillong is close enough for a weekend, while Cherrapunji and nearby areas need more time. Umiam Lake makes a convenient stop on the way from Guwahati.

If you’ve got 2 to 3 days, I’d seriously consider going south into Meghalaya rather than packing several small Assam day trips together.

Quick picks from Guwahati

If you want… Go to
Wildlife in 1 day Pobitora
A quiet lake Chandubi
Temples and history Hajo
Assamese silk Sualkuchi
Birds and sunset Deepor Beel
A short river ride Umananda
Ancient ruins Madan Kamdev
A wildlife weekend Manas
Forest and river activities Nameri
Hills and waterfalls Meghalaya

My picks

For 1 day: Pobitora + Sualkuchi
For 2 days: Manas or Meghalaya
For a relaxed day: Chandubi Lake
For culture: Hajo + Sualkuchi
For wildlife: Pobitora
For photography: Chandubi, Deepor Beel, or Meghalaya

If you’re using Guwahati as your base, I’d avoid trying to cram 5 or 6 places into a single itinerary. Assam looks deceptively close on a map, and road time adds up quickly.
