Aizawl travel guide for first-time visitors

By Suman

Aizawl sits high in the hills of Mizoram, with houses climbing the slopes and roads winding through the city. It feels compact on a map, then you start walking and discover just how steep those hills are.

For a first visit, give Aizawl 2 to 3 days. That’s enough time to see the main sights, eat local food, wander around the markets, and leave some room for the city’s slower pace.

Best time to visit Aizawl

October to April is generally the easiest period for a first trip. The weather is cooler, the skies are often clearer, and walking around the hills is more comfortable.

December and January can feel surprisingly cold in the mornings and evenings, so pack a light jacket.

The monsoon arrives with heavier rain, particularly from May onward. Roads can get slippery and hill travel takes longer, so keep extra time in your itinerary if you visit during the rainy months.

By air

Lengpui Airport is the main airport serving Aizawl. It’s around 30 km from the city, and the drive takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic and road conditions.

Flights connect Aizawl with cities such as Kolkata and Guwahati, though schedules can change, so check your flight before planning the rest of the journey.

By road

Aizawl has road connections with Silchar in Assam and other parts of the Northeast.

If you’re coming from Imphal, Guwahati, Silchar, or Shillong, road travel can be a good way to combine Aizawl with a wider Northeast trip. Just don’t underestimate the travel time. Hill roads can turn a seemingly short distance into an all-day journey.

By train

Aizawl doesn’t have a railway station in the city. The nearest major railhead is generally taken to be Bairabi, while Silchar is another practical option for travelers arriving by train.

From there, you’ll need to continue by road.

Places to visit in Aizawl

1. Durtlang Hills

Start here if you want a proper view of Aizawl.

From the Durtlang hills, you can see the city spread across the surrounding ridges. Go around sunrise or late afternoon when the light is softer.

Bring your camera. The layered hills and tightly packed houses make for some excellent photographs.

2. Solomon’s Temple

Solomon’s Temple is one of Aizawl’s better-known landmarks.

The white structure, large grounds, and surrounding hills give the place a calm feel. Dress respectfully and keep your visit quiet, especially when services are taking place.

3. Mizoram State Museum

The Mizoram State Museum is a good stop when you want some context about Mizo life and history.

You’ll find traditional clothing, household objects, musical instruments and displays connected with different aspects of Mizo culture.

Give it about an hour.

4. Bara Bazar

Bara Bazar is where you go when you want to see everyday Aizawl rather than another viewpoint.

Walk through the market, look at local produce and handicrafts, and grab something to eat. It’s busy, noisy and much more interesting than a polished tourist stop.

Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be walking up and down slopes.

5. Reiek

Reiek is roughly 30 km from Aizawl and makes a good half-day trip.

The road climbs through green hills before reaching the viewpoint. On a clear day, the views stretch across the surrounding landscape.

If you’ve got an extra day, I’d put Reiek near the top of your list.

What to eat in Aizawl

Mizo food is generally simple, hearty and built around rice, vegetables and meat.

Try bai, a traditional vegetable preparation that can include local greens and other ingredients.

Vawksa rep, smoked pork, is another dish worth trying if you eat pork. The smoky flavour is strong, so it’s definitely not a dish I’d order blindly if you’re unsure about it.

You’ll also find momos, noodles and plenty of familiar Indian food around the city.

Where to stay

For a first visit, stay somewhere around central Aizawl, especially near areas with easy access to markets, restaurants and transport.

You’ll spend plenty of time moving up and down the hills anyway. Staying centrally saves you from turning every short outing into a long ride.

Hotels and guesthouses range from basic budget rooms to more comfortable properties. Book ahead if you’re travelling around Christmas, New Year or during a major local event.

Getting around Aizawl

Taxis are the easiest option for visitors.

Shared taxis are common and useful for getting around, while private taxis make more sense when you’re visiting places outside the city.

Walking can be fun around central areas, but remember that Aizawl is extremely hilly. A distance that looks like a 15-minute walk on Google Maps can feel very different when half of it is uphill.

A few things first-time visitors should know

Sunday is different. Mizoram has a strong Christian culture, and Sunday is generally very quiet. Many shops and businesses close, so don’t plan a full day of shopping.

Carry some cash. Digital payments are common, but having cash with you is still useful, especially for smaller shops and transport.

Respect local customs. Dress reasonably, especially when visiting churches and religious places.

Don’t rush. Aizawl works better when you give yourself time to sit somewhere, watch the hills and wander through the streets without trying to tick off 15 attractions in a day.

A simple 3-day Aizawl itinerary

Day 1:
Arrive and settle into your hotel. Visit Bara Bazar, explore central Aizawl and catch the evening view from a nearby hill.

Day 2:
Visit the Mizoram State Museum and Solomon’s Temple. Head towards Durtlang later in the day for the city views.

Day 3:
Take a half-day trip to Reiek. Return to Aizawl and spend your final evening exploring the city and trying local food.

If you’ve got more time, use Aizawl as a base for exploring other parts of Mizoram. The roads take time, but that’s part of the trip.
