Assam travel guide: best places to visit and things to do

By Suman

Assam is the kind of place where you can spend the morning watching wild rhinos, eat an excellent Assamese thali for lunch, and end the day beside the Brahmaputra.

The state is huge, so don’t try to cram everything into one trip. Pick a few places and give yourself enough time to actually enjoy them.

If you’re planning your first Assam trip, this guide covers the places I’d put on the list, what to do there, when to go, and how to plan the route.

1. Guwahati

Most trips to Assam start in Guwahati.

The city sits beside the Brahmaputra and works well as your base for the first day or two. Spend some time around the river, visit the Kamakhya Temple, and use the city to sort out transport for the rest of your trip.

Things to do in Guwahati

  • Visit Kamakhya Temple
  • Take a Brahmaputra river cruise
  • Visit Umananda Temple
  • See the sunset from the Brahmaputra riverfront
  • Explore Assam State Museum
  • Try Assamese food at a local restaurant
  • Take a day trip to nearby temples and viewpoints

Kamakhya Temple is the big one. If you’re visiting during a festival or major religious occasion, expect crowds and plan accordingly.

2. Kaziranga National Park

If you only have time for one wildlife destination in Assam, I’d pick Kaziranga.

The park is famous for its greater one-horned rhinoceros, but there’s much more to see. Elephants, wild water buffalo, swamp deer, various birds and, if you’re lucky, tigers all live here.

A jeep safari is the easiest way to explore the park. Elephant safaris are also available in some areas, depending on the season and local regulations.

Give Kaziranga at least 2 nights if you can. That gives you a better chance of getting 2 safari opportunities instead of rushing through the park.

Best time to visit Kaziranga

Kaziranga generally operates seasonally, with the main tourist period falling during the drier months. Exact opening and safari arrangements can change, so check the official park information before booking.

3. Majuli

Majuli is one of the places that makes an Assam trip feel different from a standard sightseeing holiday.

It’s a large river island in the Brahmaputra and is known for its Satras, mask-making traditions, villages and distinctive Assamese culture.

Don’t schedule Majuli as a rushed day trip if you can avoid it. Stay overnight and spend some time cycling or driving through the villages.

Visit a Satra, watch traditional mask-making, talk to local artisans and sit down for an Assamese meal.

Majuli is also a good place to slow down after the wildlife-heavy part of your trip.

4. Manas National Park

Manas is another excellent wildlife destination, especially if you want a quieter alternative to Kaziranga.

The park sits close to the Bhutan border and has forests, grasslands and river habitats. It’s home to species including the Indian rhinoceros, Asian elephant, wild buffalo, tiger and several rare birds.

The scenery changes as you move through the park, which makes the safari itself part of the experience.

Plan at least 2 nights around Manas. The journey from Guwahati takes time, so staying longer makes much more sense than driving there for a few hours and heading back.

5. Sivasagar

For Assam’s Ahom history, go to Sivasagar.

The town was the capital of the Ahom Kingdom and has several important historical monuments. The Sivasagar Sivadol is the most recognizable, with its tall temple structure beside the Sivasagar tank.

Also visit Rang Ghar and Talatal Ghar.

You can cover the main sights in a day, but staying overnight gives you more time to explore without turning the visit into a checklist.

6. Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh is a good stop if you want to see Assam’s tea country.

The town itself isn’t the main attraction. The tea gardens around it are.

Visit a tea estate, walk through the gardens and learn how Assam tea is produced.

If you’re a tea person, this is one of those stops where you’ll probably spend more time taking photos than you expected.

7. Tezpur

Tezpur sits on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra and makes a useful stop between Guwahati and other destinations in central and upper Assam.

Visit Agnigarh, Chitralekha Udyan and Bamuni Hills.

The town also has a relaxed feel compared with Guwahati, so it’s a decent place to spend a night while travelling through the region.

8. Haflong

Want hills?

Head to Haflong.

It’s the headquarters of Dima Hasao district and one of Assam’s better-known hill destinations. The climate is cooler than the plains, and the surrounding hills make it a completely different experience from Guwahati or Kaziranga.

Visit Haflong Lake, explore the surrounding countryside and take your time with the road journey.

Haflong works particularly well if you want to add a few slower days to a wildlife and culture-focused trip.

9. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

Pobitora is one of the easiest wildlife trips from Guwahati.

It’s much smaller than Kaziranga, but it has a high concentration of one-horned rhinos. That makes it a useful option if you don’t have enough time for a longer Kaziranga stay.

You can visit Pobitora as a day trip from Guwahati, depending on your schedule.

If your Assam trip is short, this is one of the easiest ways to add a wildlife experience without travelling deep into the state.

10. Orang National Park

Orang sits on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra and is another place to look for rhinos and other wildlife.

It’s smaller and less famous than Kaziranga, which can make it appealing if you’re looking for a different park experience.

Orang can also fit into a wider route through central Assam.

Things to eat in Assam

You should leave room in your itinerary for food.

Assamese cooking has plenty of dishes worth trying, and meals can be very different from what you’ll find in other parts of India.

Try:

  • Khar
  • Masor tenga
  • Duck curry
  • Chicken with sesame or black sesame
  • Pork dishes
  • Aloo pitika
  • Pitha
  • Assamese thali
  • Jolpan for breakfast

Masor tenga is particularly good if you like light, tangy fish curry.

And if someone offers you pitha with tea, say yes.

Best time to visit Assam

For a first trip, October to April is generally the easiest period to plan around.

The weather is more comfortable for road trips and sightseeing, and wildlife tourism is especially popular during the cooler, drier months.

Winter can be excellent for Kaziranga, Manas and Pobitora.

The monsoon changes the equation. Assam receives heavy rain, rivers rise, and some wildlife areas may close or restrict tourism during parts of the rainy season.

Always check the latest park and transport conditions before you leave.

How many days do you need?

For a quick Assam trip, give yourself 5 to 6 days.

A comfortable first trip would look something like this:

Day 1: Guwahati
Day 2: Guwahati to Kaziranga
Day 3: Kaziranga safari
Day 4: Kaziranga to Majuli
Day 5: Majuli
Day 6: Majuli to Sivasagar or Dibrugarh

If you have 8 to 10 days, you can slow the route down and add Manas, Tezpur, Haflong or another wildlife stop.

How to get around Assam

Guwahati is the main transport hub.

You can reach Assam by air, train and road, with Guwahati being the easiest entry point for most travellers.

For a multi-city Assam trip, hiring a car with a driver is usually the easiest option. Distances can look manageable on a map and then turn into a full day on the road.

Trains are useful for several longer routes, especially around Upper Assam.

For Kaziranga, Majuli and smaller towns, check road and ferry conditions before setting out.

A few practical tips

Carry cash. Cards and digital payments are common in cities and tourist areas, but smaller places can be different.

Start road journeys early. Assam is a big state, and daylight makes long drives much easier.

Keep buffer time. Ferries, weather and road conditions can affect plans, particularly around the Brahmaputra.

Book wildlife safaris ahead during busy months. Popular dates can fill quickly.

Respect local customs. Dress appropriately when visiting temples and Satras, and follow photography rules.

Don’t pack too many destinations. Assam rewards slow travel. Give yourself time to sit beside a river, stop at a tea garden, or have an unplanned lunch somewhere that looks interesting.

Assam trip cost

Your budget depends heavily on transport and accommodation.

A budget traveller can keep costs down with trains, buses, simple hotels and local food. A private car with a driver, better hotels and several wildlife safaris will push the cost up quickly.

For a comfortable trip, I’d budget separately for:

  • Hotels
  • Private transport
  • Wildlife safaris
  • Flights or trains
  • Food
  • Entry fees
  • Ferry tickets
  • Local guides

Wildlife safaris deserve their own budget because prices vary by park, zone, vehicle and season.

A good first Assam route

If you’re visiting Assam for the first time, I’d keep it simple:

Guwahati → Kaziranga → Majuli → Sivasagar → Dibrugarh

You get temples, wildlife, river-island culture, Ahom history and tea gardens in one trip.

Add Manas if wildlife is your main reason for visiting. Add Haflong if you want hills and a slower few days.

Assam is big enough for several trips. You don’t have to finish the whole state in one go.
