Best time to visit Assam

Assam changes character with the seasons.

Winter brings cool mornings and comfortable sightseeing. Summer gets hotter, especially around the cities. Then the monsoon arrives, and the Brahmaputra and its tributaries start reshaping the landscape.

So, when should you go?

For most travellers, October to April is the best time to visit Assam. If wildlife is your priority, the months between November and April are especially good.

October to November: green, fresh and quiet

October is when Assam starts drying out after the monsoon.

The countryside is still intensely green, rivers are full, and the weather gradually becomes easier for long drives. By November, mornings and evenings are pleasantly cool.

This is a good period for exploring Guwahati, Majuli, Sivasagar, Tezpur and Kaziranga without dealing with the heavy rain of the monsoon months.

Majuli is particularly nice around this time. You can spend a few days cycling around villages, visiting satras and watching the island settle into its winter rhythm.

December to February: the best overall weather

If you want comfortable weather, pick winter.

Daytime temperatures are usually pleasant, while mornings can feel properly chilly in some parts of Assam. December and January are especially good for road trips because you can spend hours outside without getting cooked by the sun.

This is also a strong season for wildlife trips.

Kaziranga is one of the big reasons to visit Assam during this period. The park normally operates during the dry season, and the cooler weather makes early-morning safaris much more comfortable.

If you’re planning a first trip to Assam and want to cover several places, December to February is probably my pick.

March to April: great for wildlife and tea gardens

March brings warmer days, but the weather is still manageable.

Wildlife trips remain popular, and the forests start looking different as the dry season progresses. April can get noticeably hotter, especially in the afternoons.

This is also a good time to see Assam’s tea-growing areas. Around Dibrugarh, Jorhat and nearby districts, you’ll find huge stretches of tea gardens.

April has another reason to visit: Rongali Bihu, Assam’s biggest festival, usually falls around mid-April.

The whole state gets louder and more colourful. Traditional music, dancing, food and community celebrations take over towns and villages.

If experiencing Assamese culture is high on your list, try to plan around Bihu.

May to September: hot, wet and unpredictable

Summer begins getting uncomfortable from May.

Temperatures rise, humidity climbs, and afternoon showers become more common. June to September brings the southwest monsoon, with Assam receiving heavy rainfall.

And the rain can be serious.

The Brahmaputra and other rivers rise, roads can be affected, and some wildlife areas may close during the monsoon season. Kaziranga, for example, usually shuts during the peak flood period.

Still, don’t write off the monsoon completely.

If you like dramatic skies, swollen rivers and impossibly green countryside, this season has its own appeal. Just build extra time into your itinerary and check local road and attraction conditions before travelling.

Best month by travel goal

What you want Best time
First trip to Assam December to February
Kaziranga wildlife safari November to April
Tea gardens March to April
Rongali Bihu April
Majuli October to April
Road trip November to March
Comfortable sightseeing November to February
Monsoon scenery June to September
Fewer tourists October, November and late April

So, when should you visit Assam?

December to February is the safest choice for a first visit. The weather works well for sightseeing, road trips and wildlife.

Go in March or April if tea gardens and Rongali Bihu matter more to you.

And if you specifically want Assam during the rains, June to September can be beautiful, but you’ll need a more flexible itinerary.

For a typical 5 to 7-day Assam trip, I’d choose November to March. You get good weather, easier travel and plenty of time outdoors.
