Best time to visit Northeast India

Northeast India covers 8 states, and the weather can change dramatically between places like Sikkim, Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura. So the best month depends on what you actually want to see.

For most travelers, October to April is the safest window. You’ll get clearer skies, comfortable temperatures in many destinations, better road conditions and plenty of opportunities for sightseeing.

October to November: probably the best overall

This is my pick if you want a little bit of everything.

The monsoon has mostly moved away, the hills are greener, waterfalls are still flowing, and the weather starts getting comfortable. Meghalaya is especially good around this time, while Assam works well for wildlife trips and Kaziranga.

Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh can also be excellent, although higher areas get cold quickly.

December to February: cold, clear and beautiful

Winter brings crisp mornings and clearer mountain views.

Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland are great choices if you enjoy cold weather, mountain scenery and cultural festivals. Some high-altitude roads and passes can close because of snow, so check local conditions before planning a route.

If you’re visiting Meghalaya, pack a proper jacket. Shillong can get surprisingly chilly.

March to April: flowers, greenery and pleasant weather

Spring is one of the nicest times to travel through the Northeast.

Meghalaya starts looking especially good, while Assam becomes a strong choice for wildlife and outdoor trips. In Arunachal Pradesh, places such as Tawang can still be cold, but lower-altitude areas become easier to explore.

April also brings festivals and local celebrations across several states, so it’s worth checking the calendar before booking your trip.

May to September: monsoon changes the plan

This is where Northeast India gets tricky.

Meghalaya receives some of the heaviest rainfall on Earth, particularly around Mawsynram and Cherrapunji. The waterfalls are spectacular during the rainy season, but heavy rain can affect roads, hiking routes and travel times.

If waterfalls are your main reason for visiting Meghalaya, June to September can be worth it. If you’re planning a multi-state road trip, I’d choose another season.

Best time by destination

Destination Best months
Meghalaya October to April
Assam October to April
Kaziranga November to April
Arunachal Pradesh October to April
Sikkim March to May, October to December
Nagaland October to May
Mizoram October to March
Manipur October to April
Tripura October to March

My overall pick: October to April. If you want pleasant weather and a classic Northeast India trip, aim for October-November or March-April. If you’re chasing dramatic waterfalls in Meghalaya, summer monsoon is a completely different experience.
