Guwahati travel guide for first-time visitors

Guwahati is where many trips to Assam begin.

You’ll probably arrive here by flight or train, spend a night or 2, and then head toward Kaziranga, Shillong, Cherrapunji, or deeper into Assam. But give Guwahati some time. The city has enough to keep a first-time visitor busy without turning your trip into a checklist.

When to visit Guwahati

October to April is the easiest time for a first trip.

The weather is generally more comfortable, and the cooler months work well for combining Guwahati with places such as Kaziranga National Park and Meghalaya.

April and May get hotter. The monsoon arrives around June and can bring heavy rain, so keep extra travel time if you’re visiting during the wetter months.

How to reach Guwahati

Guwahati is the main transport hub for Assam and much of Northeast India.

By air

Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is around 20 km from central Guwahati.

Flights connect the city with major Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

A taxi or app-based cab is usually the easiest way to reach your hotel.

By train

Guwahati Railway Station has frequent trains connecting Assam with Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and other parts of India.

If you’re travelling around Northeast India by train, Guwahati will probably appear somewhere in your itinerary.

By road

Guwahati has road connections to Shillong, Kaziranga, Tezpur, Jorhat and other destinations across Assam and Meghalaya.

For nearby destinations, buses, shared taxis and private cabs are common options.

Best places to visit in Guwahati

You don’t need 4 days to see the main sights. 2 full days is a good starting point.

Kamakhya Temple

Kamakhya Temple sits on Nilachal Hill and is one of the most important Shakti temples in India.

The temple gets extremely busy during festivals and peak periods. If you want a quieter visit, go early in the morning and avoid the busiest hours.

Dress respectfully and expect queues.

Umananda Temple

Umananda Temple sits on Umananda Island in the Brahmaputra River.

You can take a ferry from Guwahati to reach the island. The boat ride itself is part of the experience, especially when the river is calm.

Give yourself a couple of hours for the trip rather than trying to squeeze it between tightly scheduled attractions.

Assam State Museum

If you want some context before travelling around Assam, spend an hour or 2 at the Assam State Museum.

You’ll find archaeological objects, sculptures, traditional items and material connected with the history and culture of Assam.

Assam State Zoo

The Assam State Zoo sits inside Hengrabari Reserve Forest.

It can work well for families, especially if you’re travelling with children. Go earlier in the day when possible.

Brahmaputra River

Spend some time beside the Brahmaputra.

A sunset cruise is a popular option, but even sitting by the river for a while can be enough. The scale of the river is hard to appreciate from a car window.

What to eat in Guwahati

Assamese food deserves some attention during your trip.

Try khar, masor tenga, duck curry, pitha and local rice-based dishes. Fish is common, and flavours tend to be quite different from the North Indian food you’ll find across much of the country.

For a casual introduction to Assamese food, ask your hotel or a local for a good traditional restaurant rather than choosing purely from tourist lists.

And keep some room for tea. You are in Assam, after all.

Where to stay in Guwahati

Your best area depends on how you’re travelling.

Paltan Bazaar is convenient if you’re arriving by train and want easy access to transport.

G.S. Road has plenty of hotels, restaurants and shopping options. It’s useful if you want to stay somewhere more central for city sightseeing.

Dispur works well for longer stays and access to the newer parts of the city.

If you’re staying only 1 night before an early flight, choose your hotel based on airport access rather than sightseeing.

How many days do you need?

For a quick visit:

1 day: Kamakhya Temple + city sightseeing + Brahmaputra sunset.

2 days: Add Umananda Island, Assam State Museum and time for local food.

3 days: You can slow down and add the zoo, shopping and a longer river experience.

If Guwahati is simply your entry point for a larger Northeast India trip, 1 to 2 days is enough.

Guwahati to Kaziranga

Kaziranga National Park is one of the easiest major destinations to add after Guwahati.

The journey takes several hours by road, depending on traffic and where you’re staying in the park area.

A common itinerary is:

Guwahati → Kaziranga → Jorhat → Majuli

You can also head from Guwahati toward Meghalaya if that’s your main plan.

Guwahati to Shillong

Shillong is roughly 100 km from Guwahati, although road conditions and traffic can make the journey take longer than the distance suggests.

Shared taxis are common, while private cabs give you more flexibility.

If you’re planning Meghalaya, Guwahati is usually the easiest arrival point.

Getting around Guwahati

For short trips, auto-rickshaws and app-based cabs are useful.

Traffic can be heavy, particularly around busy parts of the city during peak hours. Give yourself more time than Google Maps’ ideal driving estimate when you have a train or flight to catch.

For sightseeing, grouping nearby places together will save you a lot of unnecessary driving.

Guwahati travel tips for first-time visitors

  • Carry some cash for smaller shops, transport and local places.
  • Start sightseeing early, especially in warmer months.
  • Keep extra time for traffic.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for temple visits.
  • Check temple timings before leaving your hotel.
  • Carry an umbrella during the rainy season.
  • Book accommodation near your planned transport route.
  • If you’re heading to Kaziranga or Meghalaya next, don’t pack your Guwahati itinerary too tightly.

Guwahati works best as the beginning of a Northeast India trip.

Spend a day or 2 getting your bearings, eat some Assamese food, watch the Brahmaputra at sunset, and then hit the road.
