Mizoram travel guide: best places to visit

Mizoram feels different from the other Northeast states.

The roads climb through long ridges, villages sit on steep hillsides, and the views keep opening up when you think you’ve reached the top. Aizawl gives you the city experience, while places like Reiek, Hmuifang, Thenzawl and Champhai take you deeper into the hills.

If you’re planning a trip to Mizoram, give yourself at least 5 to 7 days. You can see Aizawl and a few nearby places in less time, but the longer routes are where the trip gets interesting.

1. Aizawl

Start in Aizawl.

The capital sits around 1,132 metres above sea level, spread across steep ridges overlooking the surrounding valleys. It’s also the easiest place to get your bearings before heading into rural Mizoram. (Mizoram Tourism)

Spend a day walking around the city and visiting the Mizoram State Museum, Solomon’s Temple, local markets and viewpoints. Hangi Lunglen Tlang and Aizawl City View Thuampui are good places to look across the hills.

Aizawl is also where you’ll find more hotels, restaurants and transport options, so it’s a practical base for the first part of your trip.

2. Reiek

Reiek is one of the easiest places to add to an Aizawl itinerary.

The mountain rises above the surrounding countryside and gives you wide views over Mizoram’s ridges. On a clear day, the view is the reason you came.

There’s also a traditional Mizo village nearby at Falkawn, called Zokhua, where you can get a glimpse of traditional village life. Mizoram Tourism lists both Reiek and Zokhua among the state’s tourist destinations. (Mizoram Tourism)

Keep a few hours for Reiek rather than rushing through it. The light changes quickly in the hills, and the views can look completely different in the afternoon.

3. Hmuifang

About 50 km south of Aizawl, Hmuifang is a good stop if you want forests, open grassy areas and mountain air.

Hmuifang Tlang rises to about 1,619 metres, with forest around the mountain and open areas near the summit. The tourism department also notes several nearby Mizo villages that you can visit. (Mizoram Tourism)

This is the kind of place where you don’t need a packed schedule. Walk around, sit somewhere with a view and let the road trip breathe a little.

4. Vantawng Falls

Vantawng Falls is the big waterfall stop in Mizoram.

The 2-tier waterfall drops about 229 metres and is the highest waterfall in the state. It’s near Thenzawl, roughly 98 km from Aizawl, and there’s a viewing tower because the surrounding terrain makes getting close to the falls difficult. (Mizoram Tourism)

The waterfall is especially worth seeing after good rainfall, when the water has more force.

Pair it with Thenzawl and make a full day of the trip.

5. Thenzawl

Thenzawl is a pleasant hill town and a useful base for exploring the surrounding area.

The town is close to Vantawng Falls and Tuirihiau Falls, and Mizoram Tourism also lists Thenzawl Golf Resort among its holiday destinations. (Mizoram Tourism)

If you’re travelling slowly, spend a night here rather than driving back to Aizawl after every sightseeing stop.

6. Champhai

Champhai is where the journey starts feeling more remote.

The town sits close to the Myanmar border and is surrounded by hills, valleys and farmland. It’s a good choice if you have several days and want to see a different side of Mizoram.

Look for places such as Lianchhiari Lunglen Tlang, Thasiama Se No Neihna and Mura Puk. Mizoram Tourism lists these among the area’s sightseeing and adventure destinations. (Mizoram Tourism)

Champhai needs more travel time than the Aizawl circuit, so don’t squeeze it into a rushed 1-day plan.

7. Tam Dil

Tam Dil is a natural lake surrounded by hills and forest.

The name is commonly translated as “lake of mustard.” It’s in Saitual district and is one of the places to consider if you want a slower day around water rather than another mountain viewpoint. (Mizoram Tourism)

You can combine Tam Dil with other stops around the Saitual area, depending on your route.

8. Phawngpui National Park

If you have time for a longer trip, head towards Phawngpui National Park, also called the Blue Mountain.

Phawngpui is Mizoram’s highest peak, rising to about 2,157 metres. The park covers around 50 sq km and has forests, cliffs, grasslands and views towards the hills along the Myanmar border. (Mizoram Tourism)

This is the place for hiking, birdwatching and long mountain views.

It’s also a much bigger commitment from Aizawl. Mizoram Tourism puts the distance from Aizawl at about 291 km, so plan the journey properly rather than treating it as a quick side trip. (Mizoram Tourism)

9. Palak Lake

Palak Lake, locally known as Pala Tipo, is in southern Mizoram.

It’s the state’s largest natural lake and makes sense for travellers heading towards the southern districts. Mizoram Tourism lists Palak Lake as a travel destination in Siaha district. (Mizoram Tourism)

The journey is long, so I’d keep this for a longer Mizoram road trip rather than a first-time 3-day visit.

10. Dampa Tiger Reserve

Dampa Tiger Reserve is another option if wildlife matters to you.

It’s in western Mizoram, in the Mamit area. The reserve is part of India’s Project Tiger programme and sits within a heavily forested part of the state. (Mizoram Tourism)

Wildlife trips here require more planning than sightseeing around Aizawl. Check access, local arrangements and forest rules before you go.

Best time to visit Mizoram

For comfortable sightseeing, October to March is a good window.

The weather is generally cooler, roads are easier to enjoy, and mountain viewpoints are more pleasant when you’re spending long hours outside.

The monsoon brings much heavier rain. Waterfalls can look fantastic, but landslides and wet roads can make road travel slower.

If Vantawng Falls is high on your list, the post-monsoon period can give you a nice compromise between greenery and road conditions.

How to reach Mizoram

By air

Lengpui Airport is the main airport serving Aizawl and Mizoram.

From the airport, you’ll need road transport to reach Aizawl and the other destinations.

By train

Rail access has improved with the Bairabi-Sairang railway line, bringing rail connectivity much closer to Aizawl.

For a trip built around multiple hill destinations, though, you’ll still spend plenty of time on the road once you’re inside Mizoram.

By road

Road travel is a big part of a Mizoram trip.

You can enter from Assam, Tripura and other neighbouring areas, with routes through places such as Silchar and Guwahati. Shared taxis and hired vehicles are commonly useful for getting around.

Give yourself extra time. Distances that look short on a map can take much longer on winding hill roads.

Mizoram Inner Line Permit

Indian visitors who aren’t Mizo need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Mizoram. Mizoram Tourism says the ILP is mandatory and that applications are handled online, with issuing facilities also available at several Mizoram Houses and entry points. (Mizoram Tourism)

The state has also moved its ILP system further online, with Phase-II launched in November 2024. (DIPR Mizoram)

So check the current rules before leaving home. Don’t assume the paperwork will be sorted out after you arrive.

Foreign visitors have separate requirements. Mizoram Tourism currently says foreign tourists need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) and must complete online registration after entering the state. (Mizoram Tourism)

A practical 7-day Mizoram itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Aizawl, explore the city
Day 2: Aizawl, State Museum, viewpoints and local markets
Day 3: Reiek and Zokhua
Day 4: Hmuifang
Day 5: Thenzawl and Vantawng Falls
Day 6: Return towards Aizawl or continue towards Champhai
Day 7: Champhai, if your route allows, or another relaxed day around Aizawl

For 10 to 12 days, I’d push farther towards Champhai, southern Mizoram or Phawngpui.

That’s when Mizoram starts feeling like a road trip rather than a checklist of tourist spots.

How much does a Mizoram trip cost?

Your biggest expense will usually be transport.

A rough budget for an Indian traveller could look like this:

These are planning numbers, not fixed rates. Vehicle costs change a lot depending on the route, season, vehicle type and whether you’re sharing.

What to eat in Mizoram

Try local Mizo food while you’re there.

Bai, a vegetable-based dish, is a good starting point. You can also look for Vawksa rep, a smoked pork dish that’s strongly associated with Mizo cooking.

Rice is a regular part of meals, and food tends to be simpler and less oily than the restaurant-heavy food you may be used to in bigger tourist destinations.

Ask your hotel or a local where they eat. You’ll usually get a better answer than a generic tourist restaurant list.

A few things to know before you go

Mizoram is a hilly state, so expect winding roads and slower travel.

Carry some cash, especially when heading away from Aizawl. Mobile connectivity and card payments can become less reliable in remote areas.

Sunday is different here. Mizoram has a strong Christian culture, and many businesses close or operate differently on Sundays. Plan your transport and meals accordingly.

And give the place time.

Aizawl is worth seeing, but the real pleasure of travelling through Mizoram comes from the roads between towns, the tiny villages on the hillsides, and those moments when you stop the car because the view suddenly gets ridiculous.
