Best places to visit near Gangtok

Gangtok is a great base for exploring Sikkim. Give yourself a few extra days and you can reach monasteries, mountain viewpoints, alpine lakes, quiet villages, and some seriously good roads.

Here are the places I’d put highest on your list.

1. Tsomgo Lake

About 40 km from Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake sits at roughly 12,400 ft. The road climbs quickly, the air gets thin, and the scenery changes by the kilometre.

The lake freezes in winter. In warmer months, the water takes on deep shades of blue and green.

You’ll need the required permit to visit the area, and weather can shut the road without much warning.

Distance: ~40 km
Time: 1.5–2 hours
Best for: mountain views, snow, photography

2. Nathula Pass

Nathula Pass sits at around 14,140 ft on the old Silk Route toward Tibet. From Gangtok, the drive takes you through Tsomgo Lake and up into much higher terrain.

The border itself is the draw, but the journey is half the fun. Snow, steep mountain roads, prayer flags, and huge Himalayan views come one after another.

Foreign nationals aren’t allowed to visit Nathula. Indian visitors need a permit, usually arranged through a registered travel operator.

Distance: ~55 km
Time: 2–3 hours, depending on road conditions
Best for: snow, high-altitude scenery, history

3. Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple

Baba Mandir is usually combined with Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass.

The temple is dedicated to Harbhajan Singh, an Indian Army soldier who died near the Nathula Pass in 1968. The story surrounding his life and the beliefs associated with the site have made this one of Sikkim’s better-known stops.

It’s a quick visit, but the landscape around it is anything but quick.

Distance: ~55 km
Best for: history, mountain scenery, combining with Nathula

4. Rumtek Monastery

Rumtek is about 24 km from Gangtok and makes an easy half-day trip.

The monastery is one of the most important Tibetan Buddhist centres in Sikkim. The building itself is impressive, but I’d spend some time looking around the surrounding hills too.

Go early if you want a quieter visit.

Distance: ~24 km
Time: 1–1.5 hours
Best for: monasteries, architecture, quiet drives

5. Namchi

Image

Namchi is around 75 km from Gangtok and works well as a full-day trip.

The main attractions include Siddhesvara Dham, also known as Char Dham, and the huge statue of Guru Padmasambhava at Samdruptse.

The town also gives you a different side of Sikkim, with broad views over the surrounding hills and valleys.

Distance: ~75 km
Time: 3 hours
Best for: temples, viewpoints, day trips

6. Ravangla

Image

Ravangla is roughly 70 km from Gangtok.

The big attraction is Buddha Park, where a 130-ft statue of Buddha rises above the surrounding mountains. On a clear day, you can get beautiful views toward the Himalayan peaks.

Ravangla is also a good place to slow the trip down. The roads around here are quieter than Gangtok.

Distance: ~70 km
Time: 2.5–3 hours
Best for: Buddha Park, mountain views, relaxed trips

7. Zuluk

Zuluk is for people who actually enjoy the road.

The village sits on the old Silk Route in eastern Sikkim, and the famous zigzag road below Thambi View Point is the image you’ll probably see before you go.

The area is quieter than the popular Gangtok circuit. You’ll need permits, and access rules can be stricter because this is a border region.

Distance: ~90 km
Time: 4+ hours
Best for: road trips, viewpoints, villages, photography

8. Lachung

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Lachung is around 100 km from Gangtok, but the distance doesn’t tell the whole story. Mountain roads make this a much longer journey than the map suggests.

The village is the usual base for exploring North Sikkim, including Yumthang Valley and Zero Point.

Stay overnight. Trying to squeeze Lachung into a rushed day trip from Gangtok would be miserable.

Distance: ~100 km
Time: 4–5 hours
Best for: North Sikkim, snow, mountain villages

9. Yumthang Valley

Image

Image

Image

Image

Yumthang is often called the Valley of Flowers, and spring is when that name really makes sense.

You’ll find wide mountain valleys, rivers, forests, and huge Himalayan peaks. Winter turns the whole place into a snow-covered landscape.

Yumthang is usually visited from Lachung, so plan it as part of a North Sikkim trip rather than as a quick Gangtok excursion.

Distance from Gangtok: ~140 km
Best for: flowers, snow, landscapes

10. Zero Point

Image

Image

Image

Zero Point, officially Yume Samdong, sits close to the India-China border at roughly 15,000 ft.

Snow is the main attraction. Depending on the season and weather, you’ll see huge stretches of white with mountains rising around you.

The altitude is serious, so take it slowly. And check the road and permit situation before leaving.

Best for: snow, high-altitude scenery, photography

11. Temi Tea Garden

Image

Temi Tea Garden is one of those places where the journey feels like part of the attraction.

Green tea-covered slopes roll down the hills, with mountain views opening up around the estate. It’s particularly good if you’re tired of monasteries and tourist viewpoints and want a slower afternoon.

You can combine Temi with Namchi or Ravangla.

Best for: tea gardens, photography, relaxed drives

12. Pelling

Image

Image

Pelling is farther from Gangtok, around 120 km by road, so I’d give it at least 2 days rather than treating it as a day trip.

The big reason to go is the view toward Kanchenjunga. Pemayangtse Monastery, Rabdentse Ruins, and the Pelling Skywalk give you plenty to do between mountain-gazing sessions.

Best for: Kanchenjunga views, monasteries, history

How I’d group these places

If you’ve got 2 days around Gangtok, do:

  • Tsomgo Lake
  • Nathula Pass
  • Baba Mandir
  • Rumtek Monastery

With 3–4 days, add:

  • Namchi
  • Ravangla
  • Temi Tea Garden

With 5–7 days, I’d head north:

Gangtok → Lachung → Yumthang → Zero Point → Gangtok

And if you’ve got a full week or more, add Pelling rather than cramming 5 extra stops into the same itinerary.

One practical tip

Distances in Sikkim are deceptive. A 50 km journey can take several hours because you’re climbing through mountain roads, stopping for views, and dealing with weather or road conditions.

Build your itinerary around travel time, not kilometres. Your future self will thank you.
